ACHIEVEMENTS |
|
Examples of the
Group's recent achievements include:
- Development of the Ord Bonaparte Program (OBP). Conceiving, scoping and developing the OBP through: a
LWA / FRDC resourced study of R&D needs for the management of land, water and marine resources for the sustainable development of tropical Australia; and extensive participatory processes for developing the Program’s multi-stakeholder structure and mandate.
- An evaluation of Integrated Catchment Management. A recently completed 5-year longitudinal analysis of the Integrated Catchment Management Program in Queensland that has influenced policy in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.
- Development and implementation of a toolkit for the establishment of Collaborative Resource Information Centres. IRUM staff instigated the development of the highly successful Herbert Resource Information Centre (HRIC), a ten year joint-venture partnership between local, State and Federal Government, private industry and representative bodies in north Queensland, to make Geographic Information System (GIS) data available to land users in forms suitable for local land-use planning. Rigorous evaluation of the HRIC, its establishment and impacts over 4 years has contributed to development of a generic model that is being applied in seven regions in Queensland as well as rural and regional centres in WA and SA. An independent evaluation by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources has estimated that after only 18 months of operation, the HRIC will generate quantifiable benefits of approximately $19-21M to the catchment.
- The Central Highlands Regional Resource Use Planning Project which has established a regionally-driven approach to exploring and integrating a diverse range of issues relevant to the sustainable use of the natural resources of the Central Highlands of Queensland. It is currently being used to assist a diverse group of Central Highlands stakeholders to develop an equitable water allocation and management process.
- NRMtools. Integration and delivery of analytical tools for strategic resource use planning. NRMtools is a WWW-based decision support system developed to assist natural resource managers draw on up-to-date, centrally maintained, scientific information relevant to diverse stakeholder interests in planning and decision-making processes. NRMtools provides a flexible and responsive means of delivering scientific outputs into planning processes to provide analytical capacity to stakeholders.
